Hyperpigmentation is a common condition that causes some areas of skin to create too much melanin. This overconcentration makes some patches of skin turn brown, black, gray, red or pink.
The three main types of hyperpigmentation are age spots, melasma and post-inflammatory trauma.
Age-spots usually form due to long-term exposure to Ultraviolet (UV) light over many years. Ultraviolet light speeds up the production and concentration of melanin in the skin.
